Ingredients

Scale

Dough Base

  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Cinnamon-Sugar Topping

  • 1/2 cup (100g) packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup (57g) unsalted butter, melted

Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 4 ounces (113g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup (57g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups (240g) powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy removal.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  3. Cut in Butter: Add the cold, cubed unsalted butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized pieces.
  4. Add Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, combine the buttermilk and vanilla extract. Pour this into the dry mixture and gently mix until just combined to form a soft dough.
  5. Press Dough Into Pan: Transfer the dough to the prepared baking pan and press it evenly across the bottom to form the base of your bars.
  6. Prepare Cinnamon-Sugar Topping: In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar and ground cinnamon together. Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the dough base, then sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture on top to create a flavorful layer.
  7. Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove from oven and let cool completely before frosting.
  8. Make Cream Cheese Frosting: Beat the softened cream cheese and softened butter together in a bowl until smooth and creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract, continuing to beat until the frosting is smooth and spreadable.
  9. Frost and Serve: Spread the cream cheese frosting evenly over the cooled bars. Cut into squares or rectangles and serve. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Ensure the butter used in the dough is cold to achieve a tender crumb texture.
  • Let the bars cool completely before frosting to prevent the frosting from melting.
  • For extra flavor, you can lightly toast the cinnamon-sugar topping before baking.
  • Store leftover bars in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • These bars can be served chilled or at room temperature depending on preference.
