Ingredients

Scale

Mushrooms and Seasoning

  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
  • 1 1/2 pounds crimini mushrooms, quartered
  • 1 teaspoon Kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper
  • 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped

Cheese and Topping Mixture

  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella
  • 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius) to prepare for baking the casserole.
  2. Sear Mushrooms: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Add the quartered crimini mushrooms, Kosher salt, and coarse ground black pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms are seared and browned, about 6 to 8 minutes.
  3. Add Garlic: Stir in the finely chopped garlic and cook until fragrant, which should take about 1 minute. Turn off the heat afterward.
  4. Prepare Baking Dish: Spoon the cooked mushrooms evenly into a 2-quart baking dish, spreading them out in an even layer.
  5. Make Cheese Mixture: In a large bowl, mash together the remaining 4 tablespoons of butter, cream cheese, sour cream, shredded mozzarella, panko breadcrumbs, and grated Parmesan until well combined and creamy.
  6. Top Mushrooms: Spoon the cheese and breadcrumb mixture over the mushrooms in small pieces, covering the surface evenly.
  7. Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and bubbly.

Notes

  • For a dairy-free version, substitute cream cheese, sour cream, mozzarella, and Parmesan with plant-based alternatives.
  • You can add herbs like thyme or parsley to the cheese mixture for extra flavor.
  • Make sure the mushrooms are well browned for a richer flavor before baking.
  • Let the casserole rest for a few minutes after baking for easier serving.
